Craig R. Whitney, a retired foreign correspondent and editor of The New York Times, was born in Massachusetts in 1943 and began organ studies there with Henry Hokans and Lorene Banta, continuing at Harvard College with Melville Smith and John Ferris. He served with the U.S. Navy in Washington and in Vietnam from 1966-69 and with The New York Times in Vietnam, Germany, the Soviet Union, Britain and France before retiring as an assistant managing editor of The Times in 2009. His books include “All the Stops,” published by PublicAffairs in 2003.
